the stone soldier
stands at attention
his smooth eyes
staring down the road
rifle clutched in a rigid hand
feet planted squarely
on a granite slab
sun glittering on glass
litter on the ground
spoor of bored teenagers
used condoms lay at his boots
and a cracked bullet hole
mars his face
