Not a Star
by Adonis
Neither a star,
nor a prophet’s inspiration,
nor a face praying to the moon, is Mihyar.
Here he comes
like a pagan spear,
invading the land of letters,
bleeding
and raising to the sun
his bleeding.
Here he is,
wearing the nakedness of stone
and praying to the caves.
Here he is,
cuddling the light Earth.

- Robert Burns: Tam Samson’s Elegy: When this worthy old sportman went out, last muirfowl season, he supposed it was to be, in Ossian’s phrase, “the last of his fields,” and expressed an ardent wish to die and be buried in the muirs. On this hint the author composed his elegy and epitaph.-R.B., 1787.
