There was love, and there was beauty,
In the face upturned to me;
And her hair was long and golden,
Soft to touch and good to see;
Her blue eyes were full of laughter
As they burned into my own,
Glowing like a priceless diamond-
Fascinating as that stone.

What is life but love, devotion!-
What is woman but a song-
But a lyric caught from Nature-
But an echo sounding long-
Filling all the earth with gladness-
Filling all the earth with madness-
What is woman but a song!
